The Maths Factor in Scoil Eoin Phóil

Maths week is proving very popular in Scoil Eoin Phóil this week. Read about some of the activities taking place in all the classes.

We will also have lots of Maths visible on the corridors and noticeboards. In the meantime, check the website www.mathsweek.ie and www.haveyougotmathseyes.com for great ideas. There are also lots of free activities to practise your maths skills on www.mangahigh.com.

Junior Infants

Ms O’Gorman Junior Infants are learning all about the story of 1 and 2. Their favourite character is Sian – she’s from Wales and loves finding items in ones and twos. Their favourite song is ‘Five Speckled Frogs’. The children love pretending to be frogs! They are also playing lots of games on counting, sorting and matching. They love Maths week.

Senior Infants

Senior Infants have had lots of fun playing Maths Games this week. They’ve played ‘Nature Trail’, ‘Snakes and Ladders’, ‘Donkey’, ‘Old Maid’, ‘Number Bingo’, ‘Snap’ and ‘Matching Pairs’. There are lots of numbers and Maths language in these games and they are really good for developing the children’s maths skills.

Some children also brought in games from home. Thank you to Natan who brought in the board game ‘Cars’, Dennis who brought in the card game ‘Happy Families’ and Sofiia who brought in the board game ‘Bus Stop’. They were great fun.

For our homework we made our own ‘snap’ and ‘matching pairs’ game. We also played the ‘Ladybird’ game and ‘Gingerbread’ game from the websites www.ictgames.com and www.topmarks.co.uk. We really enjoyed them.

1st Class

Mr. McCormack and Ms. Walsh’s classes have been using the interactive whiteboard to play lots of maths games and puzzles. They are really quick at them. They went on a Maths trail around the school and discovered lots of Maths in the environment. They even used their Maths knowledge in Art this week creating lovely pictures using 2D shapes and made lots of characters using 2D shapes also. You can see some of them on our notice board.

2nd Class

There have been lots of Maths competitions in Ms. Fadian’s 2nd Knock Out has been very exciting! The tables games ‘’Bang Bang’ has been even better! We even played Tables trains! We had great fun playing interactive Maths games on the website www.woodlands.ie.

Our Art this week used optical shapes and symmetry to create great pictures. We’ll put some pictures on the school website soon so watch out for them.

3rd Class: Ms. Duffy

Ms. Duffy’s 3rd Class is learning their multiplication tables and are doing really well at them. There have been lots of tables challenges, drills and games to get to know them.

Our topic this week is Data so we have been reading, collecting and representing data on pictograms, block graphs and bar charts.

We are really looking forward to our Maths Trail in the school grounds and our class Maths Quiz.

We also really want to know who will win the special award of ‘Mathematician of the Week’. Watch this space to find out!!

3rd Class: Ms. O’Shea

In room 6, we have been playing Maths games online. They were great fun, we have also been collecting lots of data – we visited 2 classes (1st Class Room 7 and Senior Infants Room 4) to collect data. We worked in groups – we had a recorder, an introducer, a question asker and a counter in each group. We collected the information in tally form just like we learned in Maths and we represented the information on a big bar chart. These are in our Maths area. From our data collection we found out that purple was the least popular colour, while horses were the least popular pets.

4th Class

Our Problem Solving activities on Wednesday were very challenging. After that difficult topic, we are really looking forward to our Maths Trail. We have played ‘King and Queen of Tables’. Championships every day and we are so proud of our speed. Our King champions so far have been Darragh Enright, Cathal Lyons, Tadhg Traynor and James Gray and our Queen champions are Emily Smyth , Anna Evans, Sophie Browne, Charlene Makolo and Sharon Fotso.

5th Class: Mr. McGrath

Mr McGrath’s 5th Class is very busy working on Data this week. They wanted to find out what the most popular food was in the class. They represented the data on a bar chart. Unsurprisingly, the most popular food was pizza and the least popular was fish and chips! They have also done lots of mental maths games – ‘The Thermometer’ is very popular. The Maths website www.haveyougotmathseyes.com has been great also for showing us that Maths are all around us in the environment.

5th Class: Ms. Gaire

For our Maths week we did the following: Lots of Oral Maths problems, ‘Broken Calculator Investigation’ an online game. We played multiplication games using a pack of cards. We loved the Card game ‘Higher or Lower’. We tried to ‘Beat the Timer’ during problem solving – you can find this game online. We also had lots of head to head competitions to practise our Times Table.

6th Classes

Ms O’Keeffe’s and Mr Mulcahy’s 6th classes have been honing their Maths skills on the Mathletics website. This website contains hundreds of Maths activities which help the children develop their knowledge of all strands of the Maths curriculum and they can challenge pupils from all over the world. The 6th classes have been working really hard and are currently NUMBER 1 IN EUROPE!! AND second in the world. They have scored 156000 points!
